This podcast is about conversations. Conversations between the host Dylan Marron, a social activist, and people that wrote negative or insulting comments to him, especially about his unboxing YouTube videos. In these videos, Dylan unboxes complex social structures or ideologies in a humorous way, imitating popular videos unboxing the newest digital gadgets. Dylan calls the haters to find out why they wrote these messages.

Quote:

As a writer and video maker who focuses on social justice issues, Dylan Marron receives a lot of negative messages on the internet. In his podcast he calls some of the folks who wrote those messages to ask one simple question: why? Sometimes awkward, often political, and always fascinating – Conversations with People Who Hate Me takes contentious online conversations and moves them offline.

Why I recommend this podcast

The internet became an important place to exchange ideas, share information and get in contact with each other. People can comment on things they like or dislike and often it is easier to write mean or hateful things to someone anonymously. Yes, you can definitely dislike the way Dylan makes fun of unboxing and the ‘YouTube style’ of his videos. But what some people may forget when writing hateful comments is that there is a person on the other side of the screen and that these words may hurt. I like how Dylan makes himself vulnerable to show how this actually feels. And then, he does something that is not very common anymore: he starts a conversation with these peoples, listens to them without having a set goal for the conversation. It is often hard to talk to people with different, even opposing opinions so that conversations often don’t even start. That’s why I think this podcast is so brilliant because it basically shows that conversations are possible and sometimes even productive. I like how gentle Dylan leads the conversations and how open he approaches the people.
